Hitler is the first name people think of when they here the word “Adolf”. However, he was not the only Adolf to exist. Adolphe Saxophone invented one of the most of the spectacular woodwind instrument, coincidentally named the Saxophone. To clarify, it is not a brass instrument as many people assume, simply because it is often golden in colour. This is not a rule, they come in all colours from silver, to blue… even pink. This wonderful sounding instrument is not used nearly enough in modern music. Its most popular use was in 1940’s jazz music. Which is shunned by society in favour of electrical and synthesised sounds. It’s as if we are turning our backs on real music, which is the same as turning our backs on being human.
Guitars are favoured over most instruments, including the saxophone family. I was rather distressed to notice that it is perfectly socially acceptable to sit by a pool and twang away at a 6 string. However, for me open my case and play, even on my little alto, would not be seen as normal. You could argue that it is because the guitar is more volatile, and there for pleases a wider variety of people. There is even evidence for this, very few bands are without a guitar. Unfortunately, this makes them generic, repetitive and boring. The saxophone is also volatile. It spent over a lifetime swinging in jazz, and almost eternity in the orchestra. Recently, I discovered it used in heavy metal. Some modern songs have included it, and they are all the better for it.
